North Devon is full of beautiful beaches, many of which are award-winning and are considered to be some of the best in the world. This means it is always hard to narrow down which ones we think are absolute must-visits, but these five are some of the best for visiting with the family.
Westward Ho!
The beach at Westward Ho! is great for families – not only do you have a host of holiday parks and amenities right on the seafront, perfect for family days out on the beach, but it is also one of the best places in the region for watersports, particularly surfing. With two miles of beach consisting of both shingle and sand, this is a good one for swimming, sun bathing, sand castles and skimming stones (when no one is around of course!).
As one of the best beaches in the world, Woolcombe is a popular one for holiday makers all year around. It has miles of sand and is perfect for a spot of surfing, especially if you’re not quite confident enough to take on some of the more intense waves elsewhere in the region. The beach has an RNLI lifeguard station, which is manned during the summer as well as a host of facilities right on the beach.
Located in Ilfracombe, this is one of the most interesting beaches to visit. Accessible via two tunnels created by hand during the Victorian era to separate male and female bathers. With a natural sea-water pool, this is a great beach for swimming and has lifeguards on-site during the peak times, making it one of the safest beaches to visit.
This beach is another popular beach among holiday makers because of the abundance of nearby accommodation. Unlike some of the other beaches in the region, this one features a small shingle cove and is ideal for swimming and watersports. As one of the premier beaches visited by tourists, you’ll find everything you need for a day out here, including parking, cafes and toilets.
The beach at Saunton Sands is so big that even though it is popular, you’ll easily find somewhere to set up camp for the day. The beach has golden sand, beach huts, sand dunes and is a haven for surfers and other water sports enthusiasts, so there is always something fun to watch.
