Summer has slowly, but surely, crept up on us.

And what better way to make the most of a glorious afternoon, or wile away a sun-kissed evening, than by indulging in some wonderful pub grub or drinky poos at a local establishment – complete with a stunning coastal view.

Here, we take a look at some of our favourite pubs and restaurants in North Devon which gaze out upon the deep blue.

RED LION, CLOVELLY:

The Red Lion Harbour Restaurant proudly boasts of fresh fish, the majority of which is landed daily outside its front door in Clovelly Harbour.

The restaurant also uses as much seasonal produce as possible, as well as game from Clovelly estate. Expect everything from Clovelly lobster to cheese and Devon pickle sandwiches.

BEACHSIDE GRILL, SAUNTON:

A matter of feet from the roaring Atlantic Ocean, the Beachside Grill on Saunton Beach is a popular choice with beach lovers, families and surfers.

It’s a fantastic place to enjoy a bite to eat or a drink while watching the sun set, or watching surfers ride the waves during the day.

HARTLAND QUAY:

The Wreckers’ Retreat Bar contains relics of wrecks, including the ‘Green Ranger’ of 1962, when Hartland men played such a gallant part in rescuing the crew.

It’s located right on the Atlantic at Hartland Quay, perched on the edge of this wild and spectacular bay with soaring granite cliffs all around and is part of the Hartland Quay Hotel.

SANDY COVE HOTEL, BERRYNARBOR:

Set on a North Devon clifftop with views over both the Bristol Channel and Exmoor, this upmarket, relaxed hotel has a fantastic 2 AA rosette restaurant.

Chefs pride themselves on using local produce – a lot of the time sourced straight from the water you can see!

RED BARN, WOOLACOMBE:

Not only is this pub located right in the heart of the popular coastal village of Woolacombe, it’s also right by the beach!

It has an extensive menu, with specials that change on a daily basis.

INSTOW ARMS, INSTOW:

This homely-yet-modern pub restaurant sits right on the River Torridge, serving all sorts from Thai green curry to sandwiches.

They also have a wide range of ever-changing local ales.

THE SEAGATE, APPLEDORE:

On the opposite side of the river to Instow, you’ll find the lovely village of Appledore.

The Seagate has been renovated in recent years, and has become a go-to place for drinkers and foodies alike.

WATERSIDE CAFE, CHIVENOR:

One of North Devon’s hidden gems, this lovely cafe is found on Chivenor Business Park.

Expect delicious Italian inspired food made with locally sourced produce, organic, Fair Trade coffee roasted locally in Devon, and a delicious range of cakes and titbits.

11 THE QUAY, ILFRACOMBE:

This restaurant, co-owned by renowned British artist Damien Hirst, has a bar spilling onto the quay with a seafood/steakhouse upstairs.

Visitors are not only offered stunning views of the sea and harbour, but also given the unique opportunity to dine alongside original artworks by Mr Hirst – you can also see his famous statue of Verity on the harbour!

THE BOARDWALK, WOOLACOMBE:

This laid-back sea-view spot in Woolacombe serves delicious comfort food with a European spin.

It’s perfectly situated on Woolacombe Beach, with views reaching out towards Putsborough. Outside seating is popular in summer!

THE PIER HOUSE, WESTWARD HO!:

Where the beach ends and the cliffs begin is Westward Ho!’s only seafront bar and bistro.

The eatery offers majestic views across Bideford Bay, with Lundy Island clearly visible on a good day. A range of menus promises to cater for every need.

THE BEAVER INN, APPLEDORE:

Another popular Appledore pub, The Beaver also offers fantastic views across the River Torridge estuary.

Enjoy views over to Saunton, Braunton, Barnstaple and Instow while sipping on a local beer on the (hopefully) sun-kissed patio and devouring the catch of the day!

THE PIER BREWERY TAP AND GRILL, ILFRACOMBE:

Situated right on Ilfracombe’s working harbour, the Pier offers spectacular views up the Bristol Channel, Irish Sea and Welsh coastline, and out to the Atlantic.

It’s famous Poop Deck looks over the sea, while there’s a log-burner inside for those colder, winter days.

THE BOATHOUSE, INSTOW:

Another of Instow’s popular eateries, The Boathouse is right on the riverfront, offering glorious sunsets more often than not.

The selection of food is impressive, ranging from local steaks to locally caught fish dishes, via a specials menu which changes daily.

WATERSMEET HOTEL, WOOLACOMBE:

This gorgeous 4* hotel has simply stunning sea views across Woolacombe Bay, and a range of eateries.

The award-winning Pavilion and Bistro Restaurants both take advantage of the sea views, while there’s also the opportunity to have afternoon tea or children’s high tea.

JOHNS OF APPLEDORE AND INSTOW:

Johns delicatessens can be found in both Instow and Appledore where, not only can you buy some of the region’s best produce, but you can also enjoy a delicious bite to eat!

CURRY ON BARRICANE BEACH:

One of North Devon’s most famous foodie spots, the Barricane Beach Cafe sits on the secluded cove in Woolacombe.

It serves a range of items, but visitors there must try the delicious, home-made Sri Lankan curries.
