North Devon is known for its stunning beaches and the beautiful wilds of Exmoor, but don’t forget the picturesque villages that can be found all over the region too! We’ve put together five of the prettiest villages in North Devon that we think you should visit this summer and it was a struggle to narrow it down!
Lynton and Lynmouth
We’re cheating a bit here by combining the two – but that’s just because we were struggling to choose! Lynton can be found at the top of the cliffs and still retains much of its Victorian character, it is no surprise that it is known as England’s Little Switzerland. Lynmouth is below and a little quieter. The chocolate box cottages give it a whole different vibe, but the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway easily connects the two and is an absolute must visit.
Appledore
For pretty, pastel houses and fairytale cottages that line narrow streets, head to Appledore. The homes here are brightly coloured and retains much of their original charm back when they housed the region’s fishermen. Appledore has a long maritime history and even celebrates its brush with piracy – find out more by visiting the North Devon Maritime Museum and spend time in the harbour and along the water’s edge.
Combe Martin
If you want stunning coastal views, Combe Martin is the place to be. The village’s beach is a sheltered cove that is popular with families while the village itself is full of pretty houses perched on cliffs, a museum and of course, the Pack of Cards Inn, which was inspired by a pack of cards, it has 52 windows, 4 floors and 13 doors on each floor! Another great draw to the village is Wild Pear Beach which is accessible via the many walking trails that cross through the village – it isn’t the easiest of beaches to get to though, so be aware that it is steep in some places.
Clovelly
As one of the most well known villages in North Devon, we couldn’t leave Clovelly off of this list. Clovelly sits on a cliff and features cobbled streets that are vehicle free and many of the buildings have been preserved so a visit here is like stepping back in time. As vehicles are banned, you’ll get to see deliveries being made by a herd of rescue donkeys, a trip down to the harbour is also a must, there is something very peaceful about watching that day’s catch being brought in.
Woolacombe
Thanks to its award winning beach and perfect surfing conditions, Woolacombe is a popular choice for holiday makers. It might be more popular but that doesn’t take away from the stunning views, particularly of the coastline which regularly wins awards, recently it was named Best British Beach of the Year! The beach stretches across three miles and the land around the village is mostly owned by the National Trust, so there are plenty of pretty sights to be had here.
Of course, this is just a handful of the pretty villages that can be found in North Devon, you can see more of the region by clicking here.
