North Devon has something for everyone – we’ve got beaches and walking tours for the outdoorsy, cultural heritage for history enthusiasts, and eateries in abundance for the foodies. Perhaps less well-known is what we can offer for the art lovers.
If fine art is your cup of tea, then checking out the White Moose gallery in Barnstaple is a must. It’s well-known for showcasing numerous pieces of art, from both well-established and up and coming artists, through its ever-changing exhibitions. These aren’t to be missed and demonstrate a huge range of artistic innovation. If you prefer a more engaging artistic experience, why not take part in the portrait classes that they host every Tuesday?
If you fancy a more immersive art experience, then Broomhill Sculpture Gardens and Art Hotel is a unique experience that’s sure to inspire any art enthusiast. Not only does the hotel contain its own contemporary art gallery and art tour, but the surrounding grounds harbour a fantastic sculpture park. You can have a wander through the greenery for a glimpse not only at scenic woodland beauty, but at innovative sculptures and creations of all different sizes, colours and designs.
Dartington Crystal allows for a truly unique experience, offering not only an appreciation of beautifully designed glass figures, but similarly a historical insight into the process of glass-making, as well as creative opportunities. Witness the process of glass blowing and have a go yourself, or have a hands-on go at decorating your own glass, or even casting your own handprint in glass. Finish the day with a local tipple in the Ginspiration Bar, and maybe pick yourself up a gorgeous reminder of your trip in the glass shop!
Looking for another artistic touch of the weird and wonderful? Clovelly itself is a sight to behold, so it’s no wonder that the classic village serves as home to a family business specialising in all things silk. Not only can guests view the finished products adorned in traditional English designs, but you can also view the printing process, watching how these accessories come to life. And why stop there? Book one of the many courses on offer and get creative – whether it be scarves, working with velvet-silk or even venturing into the world of tie-dye.
We know that art isn’t always about painting and sculptures – art comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and the variety we have in North Devon demonstrates that! Rosemoor Gardens, for example, is host to some of the most gorgeous sights in the region, and exhibits exemplar designs of flower-arrangement along with beautiful sculptures in among the gardens. Still, it’s surrounded by woodland paths, wildlife and glimpses of organic growth, encompassing an all-around artistic experience and a demonstration of art in its most natural appearance.
