North Devon has been granted funding from the government as part of their Welcome Back Fund to help boost tourism, improve green spaces and provide more outdoor activities including markets allowing visitors more safe options for when restrictions are relaxed this summer.
The North Devon region will receive £86,191 as part of the scheme, on top of additional funding that has been allocated to make improvements in Barnstaple. The fund will allow local councils to make improvements across their high streets and popular tourist areas so they can safely and successfully reopen.
Speaking about the funding, North Devon’s MP, Selaine Saxby, said: “I know how difficult it has been for businesses on our high streets over the last year and I am determined to secure them all the help they need to recover.
“This is why I am delighted that our area will receive £186,191 as part of the Government’s new Welcome Back Fund… This will ensure that our high streets have the support they need as we move into recovery and build back better from the pandemic.
“The additional £100,000 for coastal communities can be used for anything that North Devon Council thinks will help reopen safely or it can be used to help bid for further support through any fund including the Levelling Up fund.”
A total of £56 million will be invested across England as part of the Welcome Back Fund. Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick, said: “As we move to the next stage on the roadmap out of lockdown, we are all looking forward to being reunited with friends and family outdoors and making a safe and happy return to our favourite ships, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Our Welcome Back Fund gives every high street support to prepare for a great summer and will help councils and businesses welcome back shoppers, diners and tourist safely. As soon as the roadmap allows, we need to get behind our local businesses and enjoy all that this country has to offer.
“I am allowing every pub in the country to erect a marquee in their garden for the whole summer as a one off power to support our locals.”
