The Landmark Trust has launched an urgent appeal to help safeguard Lundy Island.
Most of Lundy’s income is earned during the warmer months, so being closed throughout the spring because of the lockdown has meant that much of the island’s reserves have been exhausted. Conservation work and maintenance projects have had to be postponed and much of the staff furloughed.
The island was able to reopen in July, but the island’s future is still in jeopardy as it will not be able to sustain itself through the winter and into 2021 without additional support. This has led them to making this urgent appeal.
Speaking about the appeal on their website, the Trust released the following statement:
“Keeping Lundy open, accessible and protected is overwhelmingly dependent on the income we receive from visitors. Whilst the island was closed during the national lockdown, we lost vital income from holiday guests and day visitors. This financial blow has put the island’s future in jeopardy: help is needed urgently if Lundy is to survive the coming winter. Please donate to support today.”
Your donations will help support Lundy’s wildlife, its landmarks, historic structures, the staff and volunteers and will allow the ferry to continue to make trips from the mainland. To make the ship covid safe, they have had to cut their capacity by two thirds, meaning that there are much fewer visitors than are needed to keep the island running.
