North Devon may be an amazing part of the world, but we have to warn you, there are some reasons why you should never visit the area.
Since we’re always shouting about why you should visit North Devon, and everything the area has to offer, we thought we’d lay out why a visit here might not be for you…
North Devon enjoys having two stunning Michelin-starred restaurants, with six other restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide. Alongside this, the area also has a large range of unique eateries, all boasting different types of foods, with many focusing their menus and dishes on the local produce available in North Devon. If you hate food and discovering new dishes and flavours, we’d recommend not visiting North Devon.
Running through North Devon is the South West Coast Path. The path totals an impressive 630 miles, giving you the views of the English coast line throughout, whilst letting you experience wildlife and heritage along your walk. North Devon is also home to Exmoor National Park – a truly unique area to explore with its mixture of rolling moorland, working farmland and wooded valleys. If you dislike walking and taking in breathtaking scenery, maybe visit somewhere else.
North Devon is lucky enough to have a huge mix of places to shop. From traditional shopping centres like Atlantic Village in Bideford and Green Lanes in Barnstaple, to quaint and quirky boutique stores in areas such as Appledore and Ilfracombe.
Where North Devon really shines in the shopping department is with its range of traditional pannier markets. Find them in Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington and South Molton. Each are home to a collection of unique stalls and friendly stallholders – they’re the perfect place to head to not only pick up gifts but also get to know the locals of North Devon. If meeting locals and great shopping opportunities aren’t your thing, you might want to book a stay elsewhere.
North Devon is famed for its beaches. The area is home to some of the largest, unspoilt and memorable stretches in the UK. At any time of year they’re impressive, plus there’s so many to choose from. For golden sands visit Woolacombe, Croyde, Putsborough or Saunton Sands Beach or for quaint and charming beaches visit the likes of Woody Bay, Bucks Mills or Combe Martin Beach. All are stunning in their own way and are perfect for exploring. If the idea of visiting some of Britain’s best beaches isn’t your thing, maybe don’t come to North Devon.
Alongside beaches, shopping and walking, North Devon also boasts a large range of fun-packed attractions suited for all ages. For the little ones, visiting The Big Sheep, The Milky Way and Funder Zoneare a must. For younger children and teens that love to have a good time, consider visiting The Ultimate Adventure Centre, the North Devon Wake Park or Barnstaple’s very own trampoline park: Air Extreme. For the whole family we’d recommend visiting Dartington Crystal, Exmoor Zoo or Ilfracombe Aquarium. But, of course, if having fun isn’t your thing, you’ll know what we’ll say…
