As the weather warms up and spring starts to turn into summer you might be tempted to pack yourself some sandwiches and head out into the great outdoors, especially if you’re in North Devon where there are stunning sights and beautiful beaches around every corner. If that sounds like you, then here are some suggestions for amazing picnic spots in the region, so you can truly enjoy an alfresco dinner in the great outdoors.
Don’t forget though, we are still under covid restrictions, even if they are starting to ease. Make sure that you social distance where possible, wear a mask if you need to enter an enclosed space and to wash your hands regularly. You can find the latest information regarding restrictions on gov.uk/coronavirus. Please also remember to take your litter with you and to leave everything as you found it, so we can all continue to enjoy the beauty of North Devon.
Northam Burrows
Northam Burrows on the outskirts of Westward Ho! has plenty of grassy patches perfect for enjoying a picnic away from the hustle and bustle of the main beach and other park areas. It is full of wildlife and is well worth a visit for anyone who loves being out and about with nature, plus being so close to Westward Ho! you can easily pop over to the beach and enjoy some time by the sea too.
Croyde
Croyde is pretty popular with surfers, so if you fancy watching others brave the waves while you eat your lunch, it is a good place to head. There is a large expanse of beach, making it easy to spread out and you have some excellent walks to explore before or after your dinner, including Baggy Point and sections of the South West Coast Path.
Whistlandpound Reservoir
Known as one of the largest lakes in North Devon, this site is covered in woodland and offers plenty of chances for a quick adventure or two. There are loads of walking trails and the peaceful nature gives you the opportunity to escape every day life for a while.
Victoria Park
This park in Bideford is a good central spot and is ideal for anyone planning a picnic with the kids as there are three play areas covering all ages, so everyone has something to do. The park is also beautifully maintained, so you can enjoy the fresh spring blooms that appear at this time of year, or wait until the summer for another set of stunning borders to enjoy. This is a popular spot for visitors, so make sure to social distance and to check what facilities are open before you visit, as with covid restrictions, there may be closures or number limitations in certain areas.
Combe Martin
Combe Martin has loads of spots ideal for stopping off for some refreshments, especially along the beach front and the South West Coast Path. Watermouth Bay on the outskirts of the town is pretty secluded if you want something more private, while Hangman Hills offer a challenge, making your picnic all the more rewarding once you’ve walked to the top.
