The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society | Netflix Release
A 1946 depiction of life after the end of WW2, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a historical drama starring Lily James, but did you know the majority of the film was shot in North Devon? Clovelly was the chosen setting for a lot of the action although the film was set in Guernsey, a fact most people aren’t aware of. The perfect setting with it’s cobbled roads and small, windy streets, the village travelled back to 1946 to play its part in the drama-filled film.
Many of the villages memorable locations were used as settings for scenes in the film, some of them becoming totally unrecognisable! The Harbour, The Snug and the the cobbled streets all make their own feature in the film, showing off the true beauty of Clovelly. Many of the villagers had to live every day life as normal whilst filming was taking place, easier said than done when the village is filled with camera men and equipment.
Clovelly wasn’t the only location to star in the 2018 film. Saunton Sands Beach had its very own part to play and the second North Devon location to get its own feature. The true beauty of the sandy beach and coastal views becomes apparent as the camera pans across the beach for a historic WW2 plane scene. The marching ground for a group of German soldiers, Bideford was used as the setting for a Guernsey scene, despite the name of the film, little of the filming actually took place on the small channel island.
The film is set to be released on Netflix in August and is a must watch! It’s also the perfect opportunity to spot some familiar landmarks.
