With last year’s festivities on hold, there’s never been a better time to get out and celebrate Christmas with your friends and family this year. From Christmas markets to festive lights, holiday lettings company holidaycottages.co.uk has revealed the six best festive staycations across the UK – perfect for a festive break.
1. Edinburgh, Scotland
Packed with activities for all the family, it’s no wonder Edinburgh tops our list. There’s the Christmas market at East Princes Street Gardens, ice skating, light night installations, Santa land and various theatre performances too to get you in the Christmassy mood. And don’t forget Edinburgh’s crowning glory – Hogmanay on New Year’s Eve. With all this set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh, it’s the perfect spot for a festive staycation.
2. Bath, Somerset
One of the best places to visit during the Christmas period, Bath is guaranteed to put you in the festive spirit. Activities include a Christmas light trail taking you on a journey through the iconic streets of Bath, an ice rink and glow in the dark golf for the family.
3. Mousehole, Cornwall
Mousehole may not be somewhere you’ve heard before, but this Cornish village is one of the best places to see Christmas lights in the UK. This year, Mousehole are operating a ‘soft switch on’, so by mid-December the village’s lights will be fully up and twinkling – making this the perfect pre-Christmas staycation break by the sea.
4. York, North Yorkshire
With its cobbled streets and cosy pubs, York is one of the very best places to escape to during the festive season. York’s annual Christmas Festival is packed full of fun activities, including a Christmas market and lights illuminating York’s beautiful architecture, and York even has its own Winter Wonderland with ice rink, rides and a Santa – perfect to take the family.
5. Clovelly, North Devon
The gorgeous cliffside village in North Devon is a popular staycation spot year-round – but even more so at Christmas. Their annual Christmas light switch on takes place at the end of November, with the village’s cobbled streets and walk to the harbour illuminating. Clovelly also celebrates the big days well too, with their annual Boxing Day BBQ bash and New Year’s celebrations well worth a visit.
6. Cardiff, Wales
For anyone wanting a jam-packed festive staycation, consider Cardiff. Cardiff’s main attraction, Winter Wonderland, runs from the middle of November and offers fun fairs, ice rinks, a market and an alpine village too. Plus, there’s a Santa’s Grotto at Cardiff Castle and plenty of family-friendly festive entertainment at the theatres – perfect for the kids.
Commenting on the best festive staycations, Shannon Keary, Digital PR Manager at holidaycottages.co.uk says: “With Christmas fast approaching, many of us may be thinking of taking a staycation in the run up to the festivities, where we can enjoy Christmas markets, ice skating and even Santa’s grottos. We hope this will inspire anyone to take a Christmassy break and really enjoy the best time of the year!”
