Can you believe it? 2017 is nearly over! But, whether you’ll be sad to see the end of the year or happy to welcome a new one, there’s no getting away from the fact that we’re days away from 2018.
So why not make the most of it and get out in North Devon, celebrating the end of the year with friends and family? There’s lots to do for everyone; from fun fairs to pyjama parties, via lavish gala balls for the grown-ups.
Here’s our guide to all of the top North Devon events on New Year’s Eve:
One of the most popular New Year’s Eve parties in the UK can be found in Bideford. There’s lots going on throughout the day, with a fun fair and a Magical Moments children’s party taking place in the Pannier Market. As the sun goes down, the fun kicks it up a notch with live music, while there’s also a World Record attempt for the world’s biggest paper ball fight! Fireworks will then signal the start of the new year.
The Woolacombe holiday park is hosting a massive rock and roll-themed New Year’s Eve party, with fancy dress and a live band adding to the festivities. There are also deals on accommodation for the night, while they’ll also have their purse-grabbing drinks offers on, as usual.
There’s a party with a difference in Clovelly this December, with a pirates themed event taking over the village. The celebration of the historic “pirates of Clovelly” will see a pirates table full of grub for you to feast on, gunpowder and fires on the Quay, and music. The New Inn and The Red Lion also have rooms for you to lay your head after partying the night away – but book up soon before they’re all out!
Revellers will travel back in time for a Medieval Mayhem party in Croyde. The Thatch and Billy Budds are hosting a family-friendly ‘knight’ to remember with fancy dress, ‘ales for the poor folks, fine wine for the fruity abbots and cocktails for the warlocks’, as well as three themed bars and a live DJ with disco area. Follow the hashtag #ThatchNewYearEve to stay up-to-date.
If it’s not all about the partying for you, why not enjoy a delicious slap-up meal to see in the new year? The Pier House in Westward Ho! is putting on a fantastic night of food, drink and fun, kicking off from 7.30pm with a welcome drink on arrival and a five-course meal. The bar remains open until 1am, so you can have a couple of 2018 toasts after the clock strikes 12.
There’s something for all the guests at the wonderful seaside hotel this year. It all starts in the morning with a calendar making workshop, before a New Year’s Eve tea party and disco at 4.30pm. There’s then a pyjama party in the playroom at 7pm, ensuring there’s something for kids of all ages to enjoy throughout the day. For the adults, there’s a Black Tie gala dinner (preceded by a champagne reception) followed by live music from the wonderful Gary Mitchell band to see in the New Year, accompanied by Roger Lee.

One of Barnstaple’s most popular restaurants is putting on a tasting menu with South West Chef of the Year Jamie Coleman, who has conceived a bespoke seven-course tasting menu that champions local produce. There aren’t many seats left at the tables for this night of delicious food, guaranteed to be the perfect celebration for foodies in North Devon. Every passenger receives a mince pie with the compliments of the railway over the new year period. The times the trains leave Woody Bay Station are as follows: 10:45am, 11:30am, 12:15pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm. There’s no need to book, just pop along!
A silent disco, a live jazz band, whisky and cigars will make the New Year’s Eve party at Claytons one to remember. There will also be a photo booth, champagne at midnight, and a six-course tasting menu with wine pairings (that’s seven glasses).
