Whether you’re looking for a gentle family friendly day out or something more challenging, there are an abundance of cycle routes for you to choose from in North Devon. You'll find a plethora of cycle routes and tracks that take in both coast and countryside, as well as canal side trails, straight routes, circular routes and just about everything in between.
Explore the Tarka Trail
Apart from the obvious splendid coastal scenery in the region one of the main attractions for cyclists is the wonderful Tarka Trail which is a 180 mile figure of eight stretch of footpaths and cycle paths in North Devon. This trail was inspired by the route taken by Tarka the Otter in the book of the same name by Henry Williamson and as it is shaped like a figure eight, you can easily find your way back home. The southern loop of the trail is the longest off road cycle path in the UK – so whether you’re a seasoned pro or just a casual cyclist, you’ll have plenty of chances to enjoy getting on two wheels.
Highlights on the trail include the Exmoor National Park, North Devon’s Biosphere Reserve, woodlands, clifftop, moorland and some wonderful coastal views. If you’re one for exploring and getting back to nature, the Tarka Trail is a great way to see the sights of this beautiful area of Devon. Plus, as it takes you through several of the region’s villages and towns, including Lynmouth, Barnstaple, Bideford and Ifracombe, there are plenty of opportunities to stop off for some refreshments. The path also coincides with other popular trails including the South West Coast Path, the Two Moors Way and the Dartmoor Way, giving you the chance to really mix it up and explore a variety of routes.
No bike? No problem!
Like the sound of travelling along one of these routes but you’ve left your bike at home? You don’t have to worry, not only are there organisations along the route where you can hire a variety of equipment including bikes, helmets and other accessories, but there are also places in the towns and villages offering the same service. A number of hotels and other accommodation providers, particularly in the areas near the more well known trails also offer bike hire facilities, as well as bike storage, for those of you who did want to bring you own.
Many of these organisations also carry a number of accessible bikes, allowing everyone in your group to experience the beautiful scenery of the trails.
As bikes and accessible vehicles come in different sizes, make sure to call ahead to make sure that there are items in stock to suit you and your family – that way you can have a safe and enjoyable time in the great outdoors!
