Bideford
North Devon is home to the UK's first Surf Reserve, so it is no wonder that it is so popular among watersports enthusiats. The choices of watersports in this part of Devon are endless and you can get involved all year around. So, make the most of North Devon’s amazing beaches, rivers, lakes and estuaries with all the fantastic watersports on offer; sailing, kite surfing, surfing, kayaking, boat trips.
All watersports are hugely popular in North Devon and there are opportunities to challenge yourself and learn some new skills everywhere you go.
The coastline of North Devon is the place to be if you’re looking for surfing opportunities.
The water conditions, particularly at Croyde, Saunton and Woolacombe are perfect for riding the waves and you’ll find a whole host of organisations offering sessions and expeditions as well as tuition if you don’t want to dive straight in. If you’re a complete beginner and want to find your sea legs first, take a trip to Putsborough, where the waves are generally a little calmer – it’s a great spot for introducing yourself to surfing!
As this part of Devon is a surfers’ paradise, you won’t be surprised to find a huge number of places where you can hire all the equipment you need, from boards to wet suits as well as accommodation providers who are happy to offer extra storage for those of you bringing your own boards with you.
Wherever you are in Devon, you will soon realise that the sea and fishing are a huge part of life and as such, there are plenty of chances to get out on the water. If you’re not too keen on the idea of going out on a board, whether that’s a surf board or a paddle board, why not head out in a boat? There are a number of pleasure crusies around the North Devon coast giving you the perfect view of those beautiful cliff faces, as well as companies offering the chance to go sailing, whether in a yacht, a boat or a canoe. You can even catch a ferry over to Lundy Island, where you can enjoy abundant wildlife and take part in organised swimming and climbing sessions.
If the idea of being on the wild sea is a bit much, don’t worry, you can take part in all these activities on the rivers and at training centres too!
North Devon is a great place to experience diving, snorkelling and wild swimming, especially in places like Lundy Island where you can see the marine conservation efforts first hand. Because of the region’s connection to smuggling and piracy over the years, you’ll find a whole host of interesting wrecks, reefs and more hiding just beneath the surface. There are plenty of specialists and instructors who are happy to explore this underwater treasure trove with you, so if you like the sound of exploring new worlds and possibly discovering Atlantis for yourself, make sure to take advantage of the snorkelling and diving trips on offer.
North Devon also has a range of indoor facilities where you can experience swimming and surfing with wave machines as well as fun water based assault courses, so whatever the weather and whatever your level of skill – you can get involved and have fun on the water. From surfing and swimming the mighty Atlantic to exploring its famous coastline and majestic Exmoor National Park, whatever your level of experience a whole world of fun awaits.
