North Devon is a beautiful place and one of the best ways to experience it is like a local, so if you fancy immersing yourself in the region and living like a local, book a farm stay. They're the best way to experience North Devon and Exmoor. Along with a warm welcome, you’ll see a real farm in action, and may even get to help out or meet the animals!
Accommodation options include converted barns, rooms in the farm house and cottages onsite with self catering or B&B arrangements, not only do you get to spend time on a working farm, which is particularly exciting in the spring when the lambs and calves are making an appearance, but you get to spend your trip with actual locals who know the area well and can impart plenty of knowledge.
These are a great option for family holidays, particularly if you’re looking for something that isn’t over crowded, you’ll likely be the only or one of two or three families on site and the children will love being able to collect eggs and pet the newborns. Farm sites also have lots of open space, making them ideal for playing and as they are mostly in rural areas, you can easily access walking trails and spend your days spotting wildlife and enjoying nature. These sites are often quiet and tranquil too making them ideal for those that need somewhere calm and peaceful.
There are lots of pros to booking a farm holiday, from the tranquillity to the unpolluted country skies giving you the chance to star gaze on warmer evenings. The fresh air and the abundance of locally produced food, from fresh eggs of a morning to milk and grain harvested from the land around you will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. As well as this, staying at a farm will give you a real chance to experience what life is like in North Devon and you can really immerse yourself in the local community during your stay. Your hosts will also be onsite the whole time, which is ideal should you want to ask directions or advice for the best places to eat or go out for the day – their local knowledge is invaluable so make sure to use it!
Farm holidays are a good option for dog lovers, many of them offer dog friendly breaks and as we said, being in the midst of the countryside give you plenty of opportunities for you and your dogs to explore. These kinds of holidays give your four legged friends plenty of space to enjoy themselves and give you the chance to breathe in some real country air. Of course, make sure to check with the individual properties before booking as at certain times of year, there may be restrictions and also be sure to follow the Country Code and respect the livestock.
