We’ve loved celebrating English Tourism Week – it’s given us the chance to explore a range of areas in North Devon and has given you an insight of how best to spend days in these locations!
From Exmoor to Clovelly to seaside destinations like Ilfracombe and Woolacombe, keep reading to discover our suggestions of how best to spend the day in some of North Devon’s most popular locations.
Exmoor is a huge part of North Devon – not just in terms of what it offers, it’s actually a whopping 267 square miles! For our perfect day in Exmoor we thought we’d focus on two particular areas of the moor – its highest point, Dunkery Beacon, and the charming villages of Lynton and Lynmouth.
Start your day by walking up to Dunkery Beacon, lunch at The Ship Inn in Porlock and spend the afternoon and evening in Lynton and Lynmouth; take a trip on the Cliff Railway and enjoy a smashing dinner in Lynmouth’s Rising Sun – doesn’t that sound wonderful?
For day two we headed down the coast to the seaside town of Ilfracombe. This day out is perfect if you have kiddies in tow – Ilfracombe is relatively small so it’s easy to get from one attraction to another.
Ilfracombe’s aquarium may be small, but it’s packed full of interesting fish and wildlife – we’d definitely recommend spending the morning in the town exploring it. For lunch we just had to include enjoying traditional fish and chips. Maddy’s Chippy in St James Place is certainly worth checking out – it’s a firm favourite amongst locals!
For the afternoon we’d spend it strolling around the town, taking in the landscape and of course admiring Damien Hirst’s Verity statue. To finish your day in Ilfracombe we’d recommend dining at Thomas Carr at The Olive Room. The restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star in 2017 and the food is simply divine!
As you may have guessed, a day in Woolacombe really is centered around the village’s impressive beach! However, why not also check out Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks’ sports complex whilst you’re in the area? They’ve got a wave machine, climbing walls, high ropes and more.
For your evening meal we’d suggest visiting the up and coming Noel Corston. The restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide and dishes center around seasonal and local produce – it’s certainly worth a visit!
On day four of English Tourism Week, we told you how we’d spend a day in Clovelly and Hartland. This day was very much focused on taking in the landscapes and views the two locations have to offer – whilst, of course, highlighting two cracking options on where to dine on the day.
Next is our guide to spending a day in a surfer’s paradise: Braunton and Saunton. We suggested using the morning to discover Saunton Beach and lunching at the Saunton Sands Hotel, which boasts spectacular views of the beach.
In the afternoon we recommended heading into Braunton to mooch around the village and to take in the relaxed atmosphere. For your evening meal we’d head to SQ to enjoy a bistro-style dinner and some gorgeous cocktails!
For day six of English Tourism Week we told you how to make the most out of visiting Bideford and Westward Ho!. Our itinerary included visits to Atlantic Village, Tea on the Green, The Ultimate Adventure Centre and three options of where to eat in Westward Ho!.
We headed just down the road from Bideford and Westward Ho! for the second to last day of English Tourism Week. In the Torrington and South Molton areas, we recommended spending the day checking out the attractions they have to offer and ending the day visiting another one of North Devon’s Michelin-starred restaurants: The Masons Arms in Knowstone.
For our last guide we chose to end it with two of North Devon’s favourite areas – Appledore and Instow! We recommended using the morning to explore Appledore’s Irsha Street and all the quaint and quirky shops in the area, heading to Johns Deli in either of the locations for lunch, then using the afternoon to explore Instow beach, ending the day with dinner at the Commodore Hotel.
