With so many beautiful beaches in the area, it can be hard to choose which to explore when you visit North Devon. To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together the North Devon Bucket (And Spade) List, your one-stop guide to beaches that need to be on your agenda when you visit North Devon.
Woolacombe is North Devon’s postcard-perfect beach; 3 miles of glorious golden sand lined with multi-coloured beach huts. Great for families, swimmers, surfers and dog lovers – this beach has it all. Woolacombe has also previously won TripAdvisor’s Best Beach in Britain and was in the Top Five in Europe in the same year – so it really is a must on the bucket list!
Barricane Beach is a firm favourite amongst locals and is one that a lot of people would rather keep secret. It’s a little further along the coast from Woolacombe and features a small cove with rock pools and a shingle beach leading out to glorious sands. The real high point of the beach is the Barricane Beach Cafe, which cooks up delicious and authentic Sri Lankan curry dishes served on real plates. We’d suggest visiting the beach on a warm summer’s evening to enjoy a curry – don’t forget your camp chairs or a picnic blanket!
Not too far from Woolacombe and Barricane, Putsborough Beach has also featured in TripAdvisor’s Choice Awards as one of the best beaches in the world. The water is incredibly clear and the surf is fantastic. It’s another beach that’s popular with locals, and tourists in the know, because it tends to be a little quieter than the others.
Since Westward Ho! Is the only place in the UK with an exclamation mark in its name, it should already be on your North Devon bucket list. However, its beach is also a reason to visit this location. The mix of sand and pebbles make it perfect for children to explore – plus it’s also home to ice cream shops, fish ‘n’ chips and family arcades making it the perfect seaside day out!
Instow is the perfect beach for little ones; it’s smaller than the likes of Woolacombe and Putsborough but there’s still plenty to do. Explore the sand dunes, enjoy the delicious eateries along the beachfront and maybe even hop on the ferry which will take you to Appledore, a beautiful village just across the water from Instow.
Beautiful dunes and perhaps the best golden sands in the area, Saunton Beach is another must-visit for the Bucket List. Similar to Woolacombe, the beach has an array of colourful beach huts which make a perfect base for your day at the beach. There is also a fantastic restaurant, The Beachside Grill, where you can enjoy delicious grilled steaks, fish and burgers, whilst taking in spectacular views of the beach and ocean.
With its long stretch of sand and impressive waves, Croyde Beach is North Devon’s ultimate surfers paradise. It’s certainly worth a place on the Bucket and Spade List if you’re a keen surfer or want to try it out for the first time.
If you’re visiting North Devon on the weekend of the 15th of June, attending Croyde’s Surf and Music Festival, Oceanfest, is a must. This year’s line up includes pop-sensation Jess Glynne, Razorlight and a Chase and Status DJ Set. The festival is hosted right next to the beach – what could be better than enjoying great music on one of North Devon’s best beaches?
