This winter why not experience some traditional Devon charm by spending some time in Appledore? Today, we’re shining a spotlight on this quaint, historic fishing village, complete with winding streets and colourful houses, Appledore is a lovely place to while away the hours.
You’ll find Appledore tucked away on the hillside on the coast and offers some lovely coastal walks especially along the quay. A walk along here will give you a glimpse of the village’s maritime history and a host of traditional fishing vessels. Appledore is well known for being a fishing village and you can often see the catch of the day being bought in. Speaking of catch of the day, don’t forget to call into one of the eateries to sample it! Many of the menus feature fresh, seasonal produce and are an excellent place to stop for a crab sandwich or fish and chips.
A visit to the quay will also give you a chance to look at the former fisherman homes that line the harbour. Many of them date back to Elizabethan times and contribute to the historical atmosphere that makes the village such an interesting place to visit. At one time, Appledore was one of the largest importers of tobacco and as you might expect from a port, has a long heritage of smugglers and pirates. So much so that there is a whole exhibition about them at the North Devon Maritime Museum in the village. While you’re in the quay, why not have a go at one of the crabbing contests? They’re very popular!

On a clear day, you can see across the water towards Instow, make sure to have a camera on hand, the view is stunning!
While there isn’t a beach in Appledore, there are several nearby, including Gray Sands and Westward Ho! If you do want to spend some time at the beach though, hop on the ferry from the quay over to Instow. You can also enjoy the sea views by joining the South West Coast Path which goes through Appledore.
Depending on what time of year you visit, you can enjoy a whole host of events and activities, including the annual Book Festival which takes place in the autumn and features a full programme of best selling authors and celebrities, as well as workshops and other literary inspired events. This isn’t Appledore’s only literary connection, it even got a mention in one of local author Charles Kingsley’s books, who lived in nearby Bideford and is credited with naming Westward Ho!
In the summer there is the Regatta which celebrates the village’s nautical history and for November, there is of course the bonfire night festivities when the whole quay is lit up.
