When it comes to food recommendations, you can’t get much – if any – higher than the Michelin Guide. This year, North Devon has a wonderful featuring in the guide, with two eateries maintaining their star status and six other restaurants all listed.
Here, we take a look at the eight fantastic establishments, offering a taste as to what you can expect…

The picturesque pub-restaurant is on the edge of Exmoor, on the east side of North Devon. Run by husband and wife Mark and Sarah Dodson, the 13th century thatched inn looks as good from the outside as it is on the inside.
The beautiful pub-restaurant has one Michelin star due to the fact that Mark creates exceptional dishes using only the finest local ingredients – and then presents them all with exquisite taste and style. Choose from à la carte, lunch and Sunday lunch menus, and wash it down with local ale or Champagne – the best of both worlds!
North Devon’s second Michelin-starred restaurant offers fine dining in Ilfracombe. Much like Mark at the Masons, Thomas sources the best local produce to create his mouth-watering dishes; ranging from Cauliflower Velouté to Exmoor beef fillet.
Thomas is a local, having learnt the trade as head chef in 2002 at the Beachcomber Café in Woolacombe, Devon – his hometown. He later worked with Michael Caines at the nearby Coach House, gaining two AA Rosettes and full entry into the 2014 Trencherman’s Guide, before opening his own restaurant in 2014. He received his Michelin star in 2016 and has retained it this year.
The aforementioned Coach House is recommended by Michelin this year. The three AA Rosette restaurant is found in the grounds of Kentisbury Grange Hotel, near Barnstaple.
Expect contemporary rustic designs combined with innovative yet classic cuisine. A stunning walnut and marble bar with an oak staircase, handmade artisan furniture and modern décor add even more style to the establishment.
You’ll find Le Gendarmerie inside Ilfracombe’s stunning old police station. Hosts and proprietors Paul and Sarah Becouarn have created a stylish brasserie where classic charm meets modern design.
Expect a friendly atmosphere, some cracking cocktails and delicious food at this Michelin Guide-listed restaurant. It’s fast-becoming not only one of North Devon’s most fine dining experiences but one of the most sought-after places to eat – full stop.
The Quay, in the picturesque coastal town of Ilfracombe, is found – you guessed it – on the Quay! The gorgeous restaurant, owned by superstar artist Damien Hirst, creates tantalising European and British dishes using local produce.
Indeed, Hirst’s artwork adorns the walls, allowing a rather unique dining experience, while there are stunning views of the sea and harbour.
NC is a pioneering, multi-award winning restaurant located at the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the North Devon Coast. Guests dine at the kitchen counter which accommodates 10, and the restaurant offers just one sitting per evening.
Wherever possible, the team only works with ingredients that run, grow or swim inside the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the menu changes dish by dish every few weeks in order to reflect the changing seasons.
This traditional inn can be found right in the heart of the Devon countryside in the village of Dolton. Beamed ceilings and an open fireplace keep the character of the building, which dates back to the 17th century.
Their locally sourced menu – served at lunch and dinner – promises something for everyone, with mains including lamb loin, pork fillet and wild salmon. A range of cask ales is also available.
Exmoor lamb, Devon Ruby Red Beef and Fresh Cornish seafood all await you at the Tarr Farm Inn, on the border of Devon and Somerset. The lovely pub has stunning views of beautiful landmark Tarr Steps, which also allows a walking route on which to work up an appetite beforehand!
The exciting restaurant takes classic dishes and gives them a contemporary twist to create exciting menus with influences from around the world. It’s informal at lunchtime, but the menu takes on a more formal edge in the evening.
