What better way to get into the festive spirit than watching your local village or town transform into a twinkling winter wonderland, as they switch on their Christmas light display? With packed programmes across North Devon, there are more than you might think to get involved in.
This year South Molton is bringing you an extravaganza of events to ramp up the festivities. Gordon Sparks will be switching on the lights from 6:15pm on Friday 16th November, followed by The Annual Fireworks Spectacular in Central Park on 7pm. If that isn't enough, head to the Pannier Market for a whole heap of family fun including Total Wipeout and a bucking bronco.
Year on year, Barnstaple Light Switch On brings the a-game for its annual gathering. Sunday 18th November is this year’s chosen date and the itinerary is a jam-packed one.
The day kicks off with Christmas arts, crafts and tasty food in aid of North Devon Hospice, just head to the Pannier Market from 11am. Check out this year's entries to the Christmas Wreaths competition taking place from 12pm, all decorated by local businesses, charities and community groups. The main entertainment will kick off from 4pm until 6pm, when the countdown to the light switch on will conclude.
An event that always attracts big crowds, Combe Christmas is taking place on Friday 23rd November. The light switch on will commence as the lantern parade arrives at Ilfracombe war memorial for around 6pm. Get involved in a community sing along, see the arrival of santa on his sleigh, head to Combe Christmas market and enjoy an appearance from the cast of The Sound of Music. If you’re looking for an all round great family day out, then add this to the list.
Bideford Light Switch On is a real family affair and runs right through Sunday 2nd December starting at 12pm and concluding at around 7pm in the heart of the town. There is something for all ages with fair rides, hot food stalls, Santa and his trusty reindeer, as well as live music all day. Top the night off by taking in a fantastic firework display.
Sunday 2nd December is also the date of the Clovelly Christmas Lights Switch On. The event starts at 3:30pm when the local band leads a procession down to the harbour, with festive carols sung by the choir and the switch on taking place at around 5pm. Tuck into a hog roast, hot dogs, festive drinks and other refreshments and even meet Father Christmas for a festive surprise before the night concludes with a finale of fireworks.
