Bike Week takes place in the summer every year, so what better excuse to get on your bike while visiting North Devon this summer? This year, Bike Week falls between 30th May and 5th June, so we thought we’d give you plenty of time to plan a cycling holiday in North Devon. Here are a couple of our favourite cycle routes in the region for you to enjoy.
There are a couple of great cycling routes through Ilfracombe, one is route 51 on the National Cycle Network, which starts in Ilfracombe and goes on to Minehead in neighbouring Somerset. The route takes you through coastal views, including those at Combe Martin and Lynton, it finishes at Minehead train station and has some great climbs as well as off road section, making it perfect whatever your ability.
This is another of our favourite routes and is a good one for anyone travelling with kids or those needing something on the gentler side. It is relatively short at just five miles long and follows the disused railway line from Ilfracombe Pier, which is mostly off road.
We can’t talk about our favourite cycle routes in North Devon and not mention the Tarka Trail, named after the famous otter from the stories, this route uses a discontinued rail line and has several off road sections, making it a great option for amateur and seasoned cyclists alike. There are loads of amazing views along the way and links with the South West Coast Path, the Dartmoor Way and the Two Moors Way, so you can easily have a new adventure each time you head out.
This route is one for serious cyclists, it stretches across 99 miles, so isn’t one for the faint hearted! It starts off in Ilfracombe before taking you to Braunton, the Taw and Torridge estuaries, Bideford, Great Torrington, Meeth, Okehampton, Lydford and then down to Tavistock and Plymouth. Part of the route includes the famous Granite Way and Drake’s Trail, so you can easily hop on and off depending on how far you want to go.
This trail is ideal for anyone wanting to appreciate the beauty of the North Devon region, you’ll pass through picturesque villages and towns and plenty of spots ideal for a quick picnic and a sunbathe!
