Cathedral, Peter Stiles - Solo exhibition at Studio KIND. 15th January – 6th March 2021. Currently open as a virtual exhibition.
Studio KIND. is a new artist-led contemporary art gallery and project space in North Devon, showcasing local artists alongside cutting edge art from around the country. Studio KIND. is Braunton’s first dedicated art space, headed up by local artists Laura Porter and Richard Gregory, offering a diverse programme of exhibitions that are curated to excite imaginations, challenge perceptions and create connections.
After opening its doors in December, Studio KIND. is now adapting to the pandemic by hosting virtual exhibitions, using impressive 360 virtual scan technology, allowing you to experience art from home via their website. The first of which is Cathedral, a solo exhibition by local painter Peter Stiles.
On leaving The Slade, Peter began to paint the landscape of North Devon and has continued to do so. His work is constructed using the layers of memory that have accrued around the places that he has painted so often. He composes pictures in order to convey emotion and a sense of grandeur and space.
While much of his work is to do with a small section of North Devon’s coastline he also paints people, recently he began a series of paintings about football which have enabled him to tell stories. The football pictures stemmed from the memory of how, as a small boy, he was torn between loyalty to his local team and supporting a bigger more glamorous club instead. These pictures of footballers have allowed him to explore the relationship between home and a wider cultural context, and the tension between tending your own back garden and reaching out towards broader horizons.
The exhibition showcases more than twenty, never-before-seen works by Peter, made throughout 2020. Expect bright colours, awkward shapes, geometric footballers and blue skies.
