Local artist Sue Rossiter will be exhibiting her new ‘Quay Collection’ of contemporary ceramic vessels from 18th August to 18th September to celebrate Appledore Gallery’s first year and to mark her own ten-year association with Appledore as an artist.
Sue left London and the corporate world to move to North Devon where she took up a ceramics degree at the University of Plymouth, Petroc College, graduating with a distinction. Her first project in 2011 was inspired by some fishing nets on the quayside in Appledore and a salmon net fishing trip out on the Taw and Torridge estuary.
Since then her work has continued to be inspired by and to celebrate local heritage and the region’s making skills; in 2016 she received an Arts Council England grant to celebrate Appledore’s glove-making heritage. Sue is currently helping internationally renowned artist Sandy Brown who lives and works in Appledore, to make the UK’s tallest ceramic sculpture.
“We are really delighted to be showing Sue’s new Collection for our Guest Artist Showcase in the same year she is celebrating her own ten-year association with Appledore,” said Gallery Owner Josie Ross. “We are very proud of the local talent we have here and despite challenging circumstances for businesses in the last year, Appledore Gallery has had a very successful first year. Our aim is to promote Appledore as a cultural destination for high quality, handmade artwork and to continue championing and showing the best work by local artists.”
Appledore Gallery also exhibits a wide variety of paintings, prints and cards by Rachel Shute, Mary Wilkinson, Zoe Hyde and Josie Ross. Appledore Gallery, 31 Market Street, Wednesday to Saturday 10.30 to 4.00pm and 11 – 3 on Sundays.
Sue will be giving a talk about her work on Saturday 11th September at The Burton at Bideford Art Gallery and Museum as part of their Good Afternoons@ The Burton series.
