24th January 2020
February may be the shortest month of the year, but there are lots of fantastic events in North Devon to add to your diary for the whole family to enjoy. We’ve also got the first school holidays of 2020 with attractions offering some fantastic fun-filled events to inspire and educate children, no matter if you’re based locally or if you’re visiting the area on holiday. From arts and crafts to seeing lambs being born, we hope that we can inspire your itinerary whilst within the area by sharing What’s On in February!
RHS Garden Rosemoor’s Snowdrop Weekend is kicking things off in February, celebrating these early harbingers of spring on the 1st and 2nd of the month. With special nurseries (Elworthy Cottage Plants, Triffid Nursery and Desirable Plants) in their Lecture Hall and guided walks not only showcasing their superb snowdrops but also other spring-flowering bulbs. Included within the admission price is an illustrated talk on both days of the weekend on ‘Snowdrops in Context’ by Dr Julian Sutton in their Small Garden Room. This is a must-visit event not only for galanthophiles but those that appreciate the blossoming spring flowers in and amongst North Devon.
During the month you will find several organised winter Woolacombe beach walks which are free and available for everyone, no matter your ability, to take part in. The walk, which usually takes around 40 minutes, is a fantastic way to enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds Woolacombe beach whilst meeting new people and enjoying a chat along the way. This will be running on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th of the month come rain or shine and suitable for adults, families, children and well behaved dogs on leads.
On Saturday, 8th February, The Big Sheep will be home to Paul Hannam and Friends who will be performing a spectacular stunt show at 12pm and 2pm. Expect non-stop thrills as Paul Hannam performs back flips on a quad bike, fire breathing and there may even be a special guest appearance from Spiderman. Avengers unite!
On the 15th of the month, WildAboutExmoor are hosting their stargazing night hike and pub supper where you will be able to stargaze on Exmoor, which is home to Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve. The lack of light pollution means it is one of the best places in the UK to stargaze and you’ll be able to understand the constellations and how to capture the beauty of the night using modern technology and applications.

With February comes the first school holidays of the year, between the 15th and 23rd February you will find there are more adventures to be had with the little ones. Quince Honey Farm for one is offering a range of events during the week including face painting, slime and bath bomb labs as well as story telling to name but a few. There is also a nature trail to follow and tree planting activities with their head gardener. Once admission is paid, you can return for the entire week for free and those dressed as a bee can enjoy all activities for free! The Big Sheep is hosting a Lambing Live event where you can meet the first lambs of the season and, if you’re lucky, see one being born. At The Milky Way, Hey Duggee will be visiting on the 22nd of February alongside a narrator for a special storytelling session in their 800 seater indoor area. The Wildlife and Dinosaur Park in Combe Martin will also open its doors after closing over winter where you can meet many different animals and inspire children's imagination from the lemurs to the animatronic dinosaurs.
If you’re a creative and always wanted to dabble in a new art, Westside Warehouse in Bideford is running a Stained Glass Workshop which teaches attendees how to create your own stained glass combined with a chosen piece of driftwood for a truly beautiful North Devon-inspired masterpiece. You will learn a combination of different techniques including glass cutting, grinding, foiling and soldering along the way. Places can be booked here for dates between 21st February until 21st March.
On the 25th February, Clovelly is hosting their Shrove Tuesday event - Lentsherd. An event that has run for centuries, the aim is to chase bad spirits away and drive the devil into the sea before Lent. At dusk, children set off Down-a-long, dragging clattering tin cans. Once they reach the harbour, the children's cans are tied together and thrown into the Harbour (and are later retrieved). This is a great event for children in the area to get involved with free entry to the village after 4.30pm.
