Barnstaple, North Devon’s premier town will start to look a little different over the coming years as funding from both the Government and North Devon Council has been combined, allowing for four rejuvenation projects to go ahead.
North Devon Council has agreed to invest £4.4 million into the project, which will go along with the already allocated £6.5m from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Future High Streets Fund, money which was granted to help make improvements to the town centre. The additional investment from the council will mean that all four projects as part of the bid for Barnstaple can be now financed.
The improvement projects form the Market Quarter, which was developed with the aim of giving residents and visitors access to good quality retail, leisure, and open spaces as well as to allow local businesses to thrive. The project will provide a direct link from the Queen Street/Bear Street car park to the car park to the Pannier Market, high street and the river front. Part of the project will also focus on derelict listed buildings and facades on Boutpart Street and will provide new gateways from the car park through to Butchers Row. Other plans as part of the project include pedestrianizing and making improvements to Butchers Row and Cross Street, which would then provide more opportunities for the Pannier Market.
The proposed improvements were developed after consultation with the public and the council will now work with the government to ensure the funding is secured and that the project can be finished by March 2024.
