Taking the whole family away on holiday can come at a huge cost. With this in mind we’ve put together a range of tips and tricks to help you save on your North Devon holiday. Including money-saving accommodation, FREE days out and cheap travel, read on to discover how you can make your staycation wallet friendly.
Camping is a fantastic accommodation choice if you’re looking to save money – and want to know the best thing? Here in North Devon we have so many different types of campsites to choose from! From traditional, back-to-basics sites like North Morte Farm to more comfortable sites like Stowford Farm Meadows, the choice is yours. See the full list of campsites in the area here.
Another accommodation choice that is great for families on a budget, especially if you’re visiting in a large group, are self catering cottages. Priced usually for week or weekend visits, holiday cottages are a great alternative to hotels and usually feel just as luxurious. Take North Hayne Farm Cottages for example – their Jeremy Fisher Cottage (above) sleeps 10+, has a private hot tub plus a log burner. The cottage oozes luxury, but its price is reasonable especially if you’re a large family or two families sharing.
North Devon’s 30 mile Tarka Trail is perfect for getting around the area and it will help you completely avoid the summer traffic! Bring your own bikes, or hire at reasonable prices at Tarka Trail Cycle Hire, and explore North Devon. Two of our favourite routes are from Bideford to Barnstaple and from Braunton to Barnstaple. Both trails include stop offs in various North Devon locations and are fantastic for taking in estuary views and wooded scenery.
Another great money-saving choice is to invest in the Stagecoach North Devon megarider. For a cost of just £16 for an adult for 7 days, you can explore most of North Devon by bus, riding as many times as you like.
It’s completely free to visit the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon. The museum is currently closed due to its refurbishment, however in the meantime you can visit the Pop-up Museum. Here you’ll be able to find out how the refurbishment is going, view never before seen collections and share your stories about North Devon. Find more information on their website.
There are a huge range of low-cost attraction choices in the area, however two of our favourites are Ilfracombe Museum and Marwood Hill Gardens. Under 16s enter free at Ilfracombe Museum and under 12s enter free at Marwood Gardens. Both are great days out and are interesting for all the family.
By far the best way to save money on dining in North Devon is by eating in the great outdoors! Pack up a picnic for all the family or pick up a disposable BBQ and choose from North Devon’s huge choice of beaches, moorlands or open spaces. A few of our favourite places for picnics are Crow Point in Braunton, Wistlandpound Reservoir and Saunton Sands Beach.
A great restaurant that produces excellent food, which is also wallet friendly, is the Pelican Fish and Chips Restaurant. Children can enjoy a main meal, a drink and dessert for just £5.95. Plus, the special offers aren’t just limited to children either! Order a main meal with chips and if you fancy more just ask – extra chips are on the house!
North Devon has hundreds of miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore, and of course the whole of Exmoor, all of which is 100% free to visit! We’d recommend packing up a picnic and driving out to Exmoor – spend your day discovering all the hidden treasures in the area whilst letting the kids run free!
