While we don’t recommend that you travel until national lockdown restrictions are lifted, you are allowed to enjoy the region for exercise, so if you’re lucky enough to live near one of these beaches, grab your wellies and your dog and enjoy!
Like most of the beaches around the county, North Devon has a number of beaches with restrictions in place at certain times of year, but there are also a couple of beaches that allow dogs all year around. Here’s a breakdown of where you can take your dog for a fun beach run and when.
Saunton (though dogs must be on a lead in front of the beach huts)
Putsborough (except on the far left of the beach where there is a restriction)
Clovelly
Wildersmouth
The Cove, Raparee, Larkstone and Cheyne in Ilfracombe
Watermouth
Hele Bay
Crow Point
Rockham
Wild Pear
Lynmouth
Mortehoe
Westward Ho! (in the summer – 1st May until 30th September, dogs are only allowed on the northern end of the beach)
Woolacombe (there are no restrictions in Zone C. Zone A has no dogs between 1st April and 1st November and Zone B requires dogs to be on a lead between 1st May and 30th September).
Barricane (dogs allowed between October and April, but must be on a lead between May and September)
Combe Martin (restrictions in place between 1st May and 30th September)
Croyde (restrictions in place between 1st May and 30th September)
Instow (restrictions between the Quay and Lane End Road between 1st May and 30th September)
Combesgate (restrictions in place between 1st May and 30th September)
Lee Bay (dogs allowed between November 1st and Easter – check local signage.)
Woody Bay
Assistant dogs are exempt from these rules and are allowed on beaches all year around, but they must have clear signs that they are an assistant dog.
So, there you go, if you are looking to get out and about with the dog during lockdown, you know where you can explore, everyone knows that dogs love beaches, so why not have a bit of fun!
However, please be aware of travel restrictions in your area and do not travel unless absolutely necessary or if you are going somewhere to exercise. Do not travel at all if you are feeling unwell. You can check all the latest guidance online at gov.uk.
