28th December 2017
As we say goodbye to 2017, a year that has been chockablock with fantastic events, festivals and occasions, attention turns to what 2018 has in store.
Familiar festivals will once again be marked on the calendar, along with new events which are sure to bring the crowds into North Devon.
Here are our highlights of what to look forward to in North Devon in 2018:
The 1940s comes to Saunton beach in early June, with army vehicles, living history and plane landings on offer at the D-Day reenactment. The event is held to mark the anniversary of over 10,000 American GIs who trained for the D-Day landings amongst the dunes of Saunton Beach. This year will be extra special, as it’s the 75th anniversary of the US Army Assault Training Centre.
The call is already out for artists and makers to get involved in North Devon’s premier open art event in 2018. This successful and friendly event sets out to help artists and the public come together in the relaxed settings of artist’s homes, studios, workshops and a variety of venues. It takes place next year from September 14-30 and is open to any artists and makers living or working in North Devon, Torridge and West Exmoor. One of North Devon’s fastest growing festivals is moving from its usual home at the Pig on the Hill pub in Westward Ho! to the Big Sheep amusement park, just down the road. Acts have already been announced for the now two-day event, with huge names including The Hoosiers (above), Right Said Fred and The Wurzels heading to North Devon to perform. There are more acts to be confirmed, while there’ll also be kids entertainment, comedy, food and drink.
This year’s Appledore Book Festival was a huge success, with the likes of festival patron Jeremy Vine, Jeremy Paxman, Ian Rankin, Sian Williams and many others visiting the riverside village for a couple of weeks. Next year’s dates have been confirmed as September 21st-29th, with the lineup announced closer to the start of festivities. The festival is a great community event, with local pubs and other establishments also hosting events, including live music.
RHS Garden Rosemoor in Torrington will host its second Flower Show from August 17th-19th in 2018. The 2017 show – the first RHS Flower show to be held in the South West – was a huge success, highlighting the very best the South West has to offer in nurseries, atmosphere and local fare, all set against the stunning backdrop of Rosemoor’s 65 acres. Expect expert talks, trade stands and wonderful floral displays.
If we were to list all of the fantastic events being held in North Devon in 2018, we’d run out of internet! But don’t worry; we have a wonderful up-to-date events guide on our website which is regularly updated to reflect the fantastic events going on in and around North Devon. Make sure you add it to your favourites, and we hope to see you at one of our events very soon.
There are also many fantastic attractions which you could well add to your 2018 bucket list; including award-winning theme parks and zoos.
