With North Devon’s stunning scenery and beautiful beaches, it’s a prime filming location for many major films and TV shows. But which shows and films were filmed where? We’ve outlined the most popular below.
Despite the title to this blockbuster, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was almost entirely filmed in North Devon! The film stars Lily James and Michiel Huisman and explores life in German-occupied Guernsey during World War Two. Clovelly Village was used as the prime filming location and is very recognisable throughout the film. Saunton Sands Beach was also used – you can see the trailer for the film here.
Can you recognise the figure above? It’s in fact the actor Tom Hiddleston! Hiddleston was in Hartland filming for the BBC crime drama ‘The Night Manager’. The drama won several awards including a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series.
Perhaps the most recent TV show to have been filmed in North Devon has to be ‘A Very English Scandal’. The mini-series, starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, explores the story of North Devon MP Jeremy Thorpe and his whirlwind affair with Norman Scott. The show was filmed in various areas of North Devon including Saunton Sands Beach and Chittlehampton.
Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond visited Hartland in 2010 to film one of Top Gear’s specials. The trio turned their 3 cars into caravans and, as you can imagine, all did not go smoothly! You can see part of the episode here.
Moving away from Hartland and Saunton Sands, Lynton and Lynmouth will be hitting the big screens in September! The film Winter Ridge, starring Matt Hookings and Olwen Catherine Kelly, follows the story of a young detective who is hunting a serial killer. The film had its first UK screening recently when it opened the London Independent Film Festival. It has also received the Best UK Feature award and the Best Low Budget Feature Award. Stay tuned for its release in the autumn!
BBC’s mini-series of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility was filmed in Hartland in 2008! The cast included Dominic Cooper, Charity Wakefield and Dan Stevens – pictured above.
The Antiques Roadshow Team visited Hartland Abbey in 2011. The filming ran throughout the day with Fiona Bruce presenting – in total over 3000 people were present!
Of course there are many other films and TV shows that have been filmed in North Devon, we simply couldn’t feature them all! Be sure to let us know over on our social media channels your favourite production that was filmed in the area.
