We’ve partnered with pocketnannies to bring you a whole new range of fun activities to get stuck into right here in North Devon. Since we’re in the middle of half term, we thought we’d kick off with a guide on how to get outdoors in North Devon this October Half Term.
Scavenger Hunts
With plenty of beaches and woodlands scattered through North Devon, a wide variety of natural life is never far away, so why not take a scavenger hunt?
You can shape your hunt to your destination, searching for interesting sticks, acorns or pinecones, as well as identifying snippets of wildlife, plants and even animal tracks.
Alternatively, stumble through the rock pools on a coastline like Westward Ho! in search of crabs, shells and tiny sea creatures, although do be careful not to spoil the home of any animals you find. Instead, take pictures of what you see - you can then use the photos for activities when you get home.
Outdoor Crafting
Get creative in the great outdoors, take a more rustic approach to den building - collect piles of large sticks, leaves and stones to create an outdoor den in the garden, and finish it off with a flourish of an old sheet or towel.
Alternatively, supply the children with spoons and containers and let them loose making mud pies. They can add leaves, moss and stones as if it is a Bake Off Showstopper - just remind them not to eat it, no matter how appetising it may look.
Running Games
It’s easy to forget about the games you played in primary school, but why not recreate them with your children now?
Sardines is perfect for outdoor play in the local park - one person hides, while everyone else must try to find them and share the spot. North Devon’s beaches, with their sprawling coastlines, are perfect for games of Tag or Stuck in the Mud.
Alternatively, introduce new rules and a base with the older children, and you’ve got a game of 50/50 going. The unique terrain of the seaside means that you can incorporate the shallow tide of the sea for new rules and keep things interesting - build a sandcastle base, or become ‘it’ by getting wet, or hide in amongst the sand dunes of Saunton.
