The spooky season is officially here, and if you’re as excited as we are, we have some fantastic news: the schedule in North Devon is jam-packed, and no matter what your age or interests are, there’s something to suit you.
Spooky, scary, fun, educational or completely unique, here’s your go-to guide for everything Halloween-related, from events at our biggest attractions to some of the spookiest spots, trick-or-treating haunts and more.
The best thing about October half term is that it coincides with Halloween, and although the 31st is a couple of days out of the holidays this year, plenty of North Devon attractions will be starting their celebrations early just in time for the kids’ break from school. Take a look at just a few of the events lined up this year.

Quince Honey Farm are starting their spooky celebrations early on the 19th October - and they won’t be the only ones!
It’s definitely not going to be one to miss though; they’re putting on a whole host of Halloween fun, including treats, witch crafting and a Halloween photo-shoot. Keeping to their famous theme, they’ll mix it up with creepy crawlies and a Pumpkin Trail in the Nectar Gardens.
The best part? All of the above is included in your admission price.

The half term rule will apply at this family favourite too, with Halloween entertainment kicking off on Monday 21st October. That gives you a whole 10 days to enjoy some thematic fun; the Castle and the whole park will be kitted out accordingly with spooky decor including broomsticks, cauldrons and maybe even a few witches running around.
The Creepy Cauldron will also be making a comeback, giving the public the chance to win daily prizes - including a free family ticket for 2020! Those in full costume will receive discounted entry at £7.50 per person, so it’s a great excuse to get dressed up.
October half term is your last chance to visit Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park in 2019 - so you might as well take the opportunity to pop down and get involved in the spooktacular fun. This year’s entertainment includes a Halloween Pumpkin Trail and the chance to enter the ‘Tomb of the Pharaohs’ - we’re already intrigued!
Rosemoor’s Hocus Pocus event is back for another year! Featuring fun Halloween characters Jack O’Lantern and Fizz the Witch, this hour-long family fun workshop is rife with entertainment perfect for over-fives with interactive theatre entertainment, everyone’s favourite spooky song (Monster Mash, of course).
It’ll be followed by a pumpkin carving session, and Halloween fancy dress is totally welcome.

There’s plenty on at Arlington Court over half term. Kicking off with daily pumpkin trails from the 19th October, discover the pumpkins hidden around the grounds - whilst learning about Halloween and the harvest traditions that go hand-in-hand with the holiday. At the end, you can collect a prize.
Get creative with a Halloween crafts session, armed with your imagination, free materials and the inspiration served by bats and spiders, you’ll end up with some great decorations to spookify your home!
Finally, visit the grounds at night - book a spooky tour, and keep an eye out for things that go bump in the night as you learn all about the unusual happenings that have taken place at Arlington.

The Big Sheep is one attraction not to miss during the Halloween period. Fun By Day promises a plethora of exciting activities for the whole family - including a Halloween magic show, haunted house, pumpkin carving, and spookified versions of all their favoured attractions!
After darkness falls, Scary By Night promises a totally different kind of fun. With live actors, pyrotechnics and gory effects, expect a very different haunted house full of interactive terrors that are sure to get your heart racing - alongside terrifying rides like the Hell Train, Twister Terror, and Arachnophobia.
Don’t worry, they didn’t forget about the toddlers! Toddler Takeover is back from October 28th, ensuring a five-day Monster Ball takeover with activities including fancy dress competitions, pumpkin patch photo opportunities, pumpkin carving (with extra help), little-one friendly decorations and accessories and of course, the Monsters Ball at 11am with Phatdog Events daily.

The Milky Way is the place to go if you’ve got a would-be witch or wizard at home, with their Halloween Hocus Pocus event returning once again. Your little ones can enrol in their School for Witches and Wizards, with a whole host of thematic activities to enjoy.
Wand making, spell writing (and casting!), broomstick riding and potion making - these are just some of the essential skills on offer! In addition, there will be themed shows, and Halloween characters wandering around the park to meet the kids.
As always, Halloween at The Milky Way is designed to be fun rather than scary, so it’s perfect for little ones.

Exmoor Zoo’s Halloween Spooktacular won’t be one to miss this year. Combining Halloween fun with a healthy dose of education, the haunted education dungeon promises something interesting - do you dare see what they have hidden?
In addition, they’ll have a new free quiz at reception to take on top of the usual talks and activities. Children who dress in costume will receive half-price entry, so there’s a great incentive to get creative for you!
Back for its third year on 25th October, Westward Ho!’s Day of the Dead Festival is never one to miss as it fills the village with lights, music, dancing and street food, alongside fire shows, fireworks, and incredible Day of the Dead procession.
Dressing up is encouraged to really get involved with the parade, and there will be face painters in the village to get you even further into the spirit.
Now, the spookiest night of the year actually takes place outside of half term this year, but not to worry - there’s still going to be plenty to do in North Devon. Many of the attractions we’ve already mentioned will be hosting events on the big night, but here are a couple of others to look out for.

Visit the Cliff Railway on Halloween night (well, between 4pm and 7pm) for a truly unique haunted spooktacular! Take a spooky ride on the railway to discover its hidden, darker past by candlelight - and just maybe you’ll encounter zombie drivers, creepy storytelling and other spooky surprise visits.
As terrifying as this one sounds, it’s for children too. With normal ticket prices applying, it should be a fun-filled evening - particularly with the free Deadly Disco for children in the Cliff Top Cafe, starting from 6pm!
Head on down to The Red Barn in Woolacombe for some tricks and treats beginning at 5pm. The kids will have the perfect combination of fun and scares in the Pumpkin Garden, while the grown-ups can enjoy some delicious food and a much-needed holiday drink.
Meet at The Puffing Billy in Torrington at 9pm for a walking tour through the woods, where you’ll hear hauntingly true tales of witchcraft, strange deaths, ghosts and more - expect anything that goes bump in the night! Tickets need to be purchased in advance for this event, so make sure to find out the details here if you’re interested.

Whatever your plans this Halloween, there are plenty of other ways to get into the spirit. Whether it’s pumpkin carving - which is readily available at plenty of attractions throughout the area - decorating your home or taking in the spooky exterior of others, make sure to get involved with the community!
Why not go for a drive up near one of North Devon’s rumoured-to-be-haunted buildings, like Seafield House in Westward Ho! or Chambercombe Manor in Ilfracombe, and take in the spooky surroundings?
Alternatively, get the kids dressed up for Halloween, and take them trick-or-treating - there are plenty of fantastic places to go in North Devon where residents really get into the spirit, such as Londonderry and J H Taylor Drive in Bideford, or the Littabourne area in Barnstaple.
