South West Lakes Trust to Celebrate Armed Forces Day at Roadford Lake
14th June 2018
South West Lakes Trust is showing it’s thanks to our Armed Forces by hosting their first Armed Forces Day at Roadford Lake on Saturday 30 June, 10.00am – 4.00pm. Local cadet groups and MOD barracks are being invited to showcase their skills at this beautiful lake, located on the edge of Dartmoor.
Throughout the day the 30′ High Ropes course will be open to tempt the daring! FREE for those who are serving in the forces and their immediate family, plus veterans, and at a reduced rate for those who come to support the day. We would love to see these amazing people proudly wearing their medals and spending quality time with their families.
There will also be an outdoor climbing tower, bouncy castle, entertainment and delicious food on sale as well as kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding – so bring a towel too.
South West Lakes are also excited to announce that they will be awarded the Bronze award in the Armed Forces Covenant program which will be presented to them at 1.00pm on the day by a Covenant Champion. The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. South West Lakes is committed to ensure that any ex personnel will not be discriminated against in any way and will continue to work closely with the MOD both now in the future.
Sarah Hallett, Customer Experience Co-Ordinator for South West Lakes, said “We are all really excited to host the Armed Forces Day here at Roadford Lake. Our military is the best in the world and they do an amazing job of keeping us safe - as did our veterans before them. This is our chance to say thank you and show them that we really appreciate everything they have sacrificed for us.
“We have strong links with the local army barracks by providing the lake and our instructors for training and team building - along with several ACF and CCF groups. Last year saw in excess of 1000 army cadet students under our instruction, from sailing to high ropes and everything in between!”
“We are proud to say that we are fundraising for Help for Heroes, so all proceeds raised from the military grade climbing tower and the bouncy castle will go directly to this amazing charity, so please do come and support this event.”
Why not make a weekend of it and camp onsite? Enjoy a night’s stay under canvas and experience a proper camping holiday, creating lasting memories for all the family
Phil Timing, Head of Sport and Recreation, said “"In order to recognise the hard work and dedication the armed forces make to our country, SW Lakes Armed Forces day is a great opportunity for service personnel and their families to take advantage of the great outdoors
and our fantastic activities. We'd like to see as many people as possible come along, meet others with similar interests and experiences and use this opportunity to spend time having fun and trying something new with their loved ones."
Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets. There are many ways for people, communities and organisations across the country to show their support and get involved, from attending an event or joining us online to throwing a party or local event.
