Steam Gala at Lynton & Barnstaple Railway
About
Following on from the exciting news back in February regarding the granting of our planning permission to extend the line, at our annual Steam Gala
29th /30th September, the UK's newest steam locomotive, Baldwin LYN will be paired with Manning Wardle LYD visiting from the Ffestiniog Railway.
These two L&B engines will be hauling our rebuilt L&B heritage carriages - a sight unseen since 1935. The pairing of these two locos is a unique event in heritage railway history and the first time that such an event has taken place anywhere in the World. The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway closed in 1935 and with it went the last opportunity to see any L&B engines - designs unique to the line - in operation, until now.
In addition to the running of these two new Lynton & Barnstaple locos together for the first time, the L&BR Trust will be announcing at the Gala the project to build TWO more new steam locos to run on the Railway. The announcement to be made by the Hon. Peter Heaton-Jones MP on Saturday 29th.
This is a £1.1M project by the same team that built ‘LYN’. The locomotives will be similar to ‘LYD’ (the loco visiting from the Ffestiniog Railway) and representative of the locos running on the L&B until the closure on September 29th 1935.
