You are here > Things to do > Rockham Beach (Mortehoe)
Rockham Bay near Ilfracombe, locally known as Mortehoe Beach, is a secluded beach nestled in a bay backed by rocky cliffs. Accessible only at low tide, the beach reveals a sandy expanse interspersed with rocky areas and excellent rock pools teeming with marine life. Visitors are advised to check tidal tables before setting out.
Due to the lack of vehicular access, the beach is not suitable for individuals with mobility issues. Cars can be parked in the charming, historic village of Mortehoe, from where a scenic 2 km coastal walk with spectacular views leads down to the beach. Suitable footwear is recommended for this walk. Along the way, you will see breathtaking coastal scenery and the lovely wildflowers that grow on the cliffs. At high tide, access to the beach is restricted, but at other times, visitors can explore the numerous and often deep rock pools, interesting rock formations, and ample sandy areas for children to play on.
From the beach, it is possible to walk to the headland at Morte Point. Historically, the rocks and treacherous currents around Morte Point have caused numerous shipwrecks, leading to its ominous name, "Death Point." In one year alone, five ships were sunk in this area.
During the summer months, the heritage centre in Mortehoe village hosts displays about local shipwrecks and marine wildlife. Visitors can also look for the graves of shipwrecked sailors in St. Mary’s church. Rockham Bay, with its secluded nature and excellent rock pools, is an ideal spot for exploration and relaxation.
