ROPE AND KNOTS : A TALK BY DR. COLIN BYFLEET AND ARTIST ED CRUMPTON
About
Ropes and Knots : A Talk by Dr. Colin Byfleet & Ropemaking Demonstration from Local Artist, Ed Crumpton
At White Moose on Friday 27th July, 6.30pm. (£6 pp)
A talk about Ropes and Knots by Dr. Colin Byfleet, ex-President and current Treasurer of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. With around 1000 members in over 30 countries, their interests in knots range from arcane topological studies in mathematics to making a living making boat fenders and bell-ropes, and everything in between. Colin is both interested in the maths and science behind knots, and also their universal usefulness and attractiveness. So, knotting is not just for nerds – Colin’s wife, Jackie, happily knots usefully and decoratively with sticks – she knits and crochets.
Edward Crumpton’s ‘Mariners Way‘ knotted rope sculpture, commissioned by and sited at Exeter University, formed part of a two year project researching and responding creatively to this ancient walkway, which took mariners looking for work, from Bideford to Dartmouth and back. Edward has made many varied and interesting rope sculptures, always pushing the boundaries in his ropemaking and knotting skills alongside his painting and wood-engraving creative practice. “Knotting is not just for nerds!” A talk about Ropes and Knots by Dr. Colin Byfleet, ex-President and current Treasurer of the International Guild of Knot Tyers.
