Evening Talk – "What's the problem with plastic" and "Going Eco with Beeswax in Africa"
About
Join us on Thursday 17th November 2022 at 7pm as Quince Honey Farm hosts another 2 nature-themed talks: "What's the problem with plastic?" with Andy Clee from Plastic Free North Devon and "Going Eco with Beeswax in Africa" with Rachel Monger from Bees Abroad.
What's the problem with plastic?
Andy Clee from Plastic Free North Devon delves into the problem with plastic - the plastic lifecycle, the threat to natural and human health, and what is being done to address this both locally by Plastic Free North Devon and further afield.
Andy Clee MBE is a has been a Trustee and part of the team at Plastic Free North Devon since it was established 5 years ago. After 24 years of service in the Royal Engineers, where he served with the Gurkhas, the commandos, airborne forces and bomb disposal and deploying on various operational tours he settled with his family in Braunton. Since retiring he has worked as a traditional carpenter, become a karate black belt, learnt to dive and decided to try triathlons. He is usually at his happiest up to his knees in a rockpool or in local woodlands sharing his enthusiasm for nature with our community or in his workshop coming up with some new 'planet saving' contraption!
Going Eco with Beeswax in East Africa Improving Livelihoods through Sustainable Income-Generating Projects
Rachel Monger has been involved for many years in beekeeping as part of community development while living in Tanzania. She has worked with women's groups teaching how to make beeswax products and established The Hive, Mwanza, a honey processing centre and shop as an income-generating enterprise linking beekeepers from groups across the region with each other and better markets. She is currently living in Bath and while continuing to support beekeeping training groups and income-generating projects in East Africa, is helping Bees Abroad with project fundraising.
Rachel will be speaking from her experiences in Tanzania about the impact of a social enterprise, making and selling natural beeswax products, on the livelihoods of vulnerable and discriminated women. Come to find out how you can "bee part of the story...!"
Bees Abroad is working to enable communities to empower themselves through sustainable beekeeping. Together with in-country partner organizations and local beekeeper trainers, Bees Abroad educates and mentors communities in appropriate and sustainable beekeeping practices, supporting business creation and environmental care.
