Nestled between Bideford and Barnstaple and just a short drive from the quaint village of Instow, Tapeley Park sits high on a hill overlooking the River Torridge and commanding spectacular views of the North Devon coastline. Part of the historic Christie Devon Estates, Tapeley has been in the Christie family for two centuries and remains a private
Italian Terraces & Walled Garden: Step back in time among elegant nineteenth‐century Italian Terraces. The walled vegetable garden produces seasonal organic fruit and veg used in the tea room.
Old Woodland & Hidden Lake: Wander through timeless woodland surrounding a hidden lake. Some trees here are nearly 200 years old, giving a sense of serenity and passage of time.
Permaculture Garden & Sustainability Features: Tapeley is committed to sustainability. Its permaculture garden features companion and edible planting, biodiversity (bees, insects), and unusual plants such as Siberian kiwis, electric daisies, Szechuan peppers, and more.
Tea Rooms & Organic Menu: Relax in the tea rooms with indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy seasonal organic offerings grown directly from Tapeley’s gardens.
Explore & Picnic: Meander through natural nooks, discover hidden spots, take in views, and pick a peaceful place for a picnic.
Events & Weddings: Throughout the year Tapeley hosts outdoor theatre, festivals, dog shows, choral performances, and more. It’s also a sought-after wedding venue, uniquely offering gardens with coastal views in the backdrop.
The gardens are dog-friendly (on leads), family-friendly, and offer disabled access in many areas, plus accessible tea rooms. Some paths (e.g. through woods or across fields) may be more challenging.
A “Friends of Tapeley” season ticket is available.
Located just off the A39 via the B3233, with brown tourist signs. The garden entrance is just beyond the turning to Westleigh Village when coming from Bideford. Be aware: using the postcode in GPS may direct you to the wrong entrance.
