Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming town set amidst rolling, unspoilt green countryside. This ancient settlement is sited on an inland clifftop with steep drops down to the River Torridge below, offering visitors spectacular views. For many years Great Torrington was valued for its strategic importance, and the town had a significant role in the English Civil War, specifically the Battle of Torrington in 1646. Today the town has become well recognised as an important heritage centre, with a vibrant community and good range of festivals and celebrations.
