A lovely AA 4 star inn, built in the 18th century. It lies astride the 14th century quay with commanding views in every direction. It was originally a beer house for Clovelly fishermen and other locals where the fishermen gathered to swap their tales of the ones that got away.
The writer Charles Kingsley lived in Clovelly as a child when his father was curate of the village church. In Charles Kingsley’s classic West Country novel “Westward Ho!”, (the only village in the UK to have an exclamation mark in its name), he based the character of Salvation Yeo on a real- life Clovellian sailor called Yeo.
Rich in maritime heritage, the Red Lion exhibits character everywhere you look. None of the 11 bedrooms are the same, yet each one has a spectacular view, either out to sea or across the harbour. Falling asleep to the sound of the sea is a unique and delightful experience.
The Sail Loft is a conversion of an old store adjacent to the Red Lion and provides 6 generous, very comfortable, stylish bedrooms with wonderful sea views.
Both are very popular for North Devon holidays, family celebrations, short breaks, stay-cations and honeymoons.
The Harbour Restaurant
Much is said these days about the impact of food miles, but at the Red Lion Harbour Restaurant, we can proudly talk about food feet as fresh fish is landed daily outside our door. We also use as much seasonal produce as possible from Clovelly Court Gardens and game from Clovelly estate.
Please contact the Hotel Reception to reserve your table.
Bars at The Red Lion are lost in time itself.
The Snug Bar
Solid stone floors, beams, and wood fire. If you want to mingle with the locals, head there for a glass or two of good ale/local cider in convivial company. The pictures of villagers from long ago who look over the room, seem to make sure you don’t pinch their seat!
The Harbour Bar has views over the harbour and is the day-time hub of the quay with a wide and exciting choice of ales and ciders, fresh sandwiches, seafood platters or maybe a dressed crab or half pint of prawns, locally caught.
There are also tables outside for you to sit on the quay and soak up the ambience and history.
